The authors survey the children of Kenya and Zambia, two sub-Saharan African countries that have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their sample includes children who are participating in child sponsorship programs and CDPs run by Good Neighbors, a large international development NGO founded in the Republic of Korea. The results show that the children who are participating in the Good Neighbors programs exhibit a greater degree of hope than do non-participating children, as measured using the Children’s Hope Scale. Their focus group interviews (FGIs) with Kenyan children provided evidence indicating that the positive association between participation in the Good Neighbors program and children’s hope relates to informational and emotional support more than to instrumental support.
