On May 2,
2022, Prof. Moonsung Kang, the dean of KU CIS and GSIS, joined the MOTIE’s (Ministry
of Trade, Industry, and Energy)
International Commerce Experts Meeting for rebalancing Korea’s GVCs (Global
Value Chains).
Prof. Kang
was one of the six private-sector experts invited for the meeting, and he urged
the Korean government to adopt a more balanced trade policy by joining the
CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership)
and the IPEF (Indo-Pacific Economic Framework). Furthermore, Prof. Kang also emphasized
that there is a need to introduce stricter regulations for foreign investment
to protect domestic innovative technologies, which are critical for the
national security of Korea.
The experts
all agreed that the national interests of Korea for joining the CPTPP and IPEF
form a fundamental basis of Korea’s trade strategy, and that it is a great
opportunity for the Korean economy to further establish and develop stable GVCs
(Global Value Chains) in the Indo-Pacific area.
