Global Research Institute (GRI)

The Global Research Institute (GRI) was established in February 1997 in order to supplement the research activities of KU GSIS, and to promote the internationalization of Korean academia. The areas of GRI’s research are spread over international commerce, international relations, international development, and area studies.

Center for East Asian Studies Center for East Asian Studies The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) was established in 2007 for the purpose of conducting studies on intra-regional trade, financial transactions, and economic cooperation in East Asia. Also active in publications, CEAS engages in various activities related to this promising region.

International Human Rights Center The International Human Rights Center (IHRC) is an interdisciplinary center for research and education on human rights issues. The center offers an academic environment for bright scholars, policymakers, activists, and highly qualified students who are interested in international human rights.

KU-KIEP-SBS EU Centre The KU-KIEP-SBS EU Centre was founded in 2014 with a consortium KIEP and SBS. It aims to strengthen EU’s public diplomacy and outreach in Korea by supporting researchers and also fostering future experts in the European Studies. In September 2016, the Centre launched a Jean Monnet Network project with other four Jean Monnet Chairs of Fudan University, Keio University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Canterbury. It was established for investigating the new aspects of relationship between the EU and four Asian strategic partners.

Center for Global Climate and Marine Governance Founded in July 2016, the Center for Global Climate and Marine Governance (CGCMG) is a research organization on the issues of climate, marine, environment, sustainable development, arctic and Antarctic governance and soft security. CGCMG aims to contribute to the discourse and promote co-operation amongst various key players including governments, private firms and academics thereby functioning as a hub for research with the vision of building the foundation for peace and co-prosperity both at the global and regional levels.

Each center organizes various conferences, seminars, and workshops to enhance students’ understanding on international trends and issues on East Asia, human rights, Europe, international culture and education, and climate & marine governance. Furthermore, GRI cooperates with academia, corporations, and policymakers inside and outside of Korea. This cooperation includes activities such as knowledge-exchange and collaborative research projects, usually with a strong focus on policy relevance.
